The high school soccer season continues to progress at full pace in the state of Texas and this past weekend was a busy one, with many tournaments taking place across the Lone Star State as teams prepare for the start of district play.

One of them was the I-10 Shootout, a traditional event held in the Katy region, which this year reunited 64 varsity teams from the Houston area and beyond for three days of action between Thursday and Sunday. Prep Soccer Texas followed the action closely, watching five matches in the first two days of the event.

I-10 Shootout Photos:

Foster vs. Dawson

Cy Woods vs. Kingwood

Summer Creek vs. Langham Creek

Atascocita vs. Friendswood

Clements vs. Shadow Creek

We witnessed some really solid performances in each of these duels and are taking the week to feature the players who left a strong impression, now looking into the outside backs:

Carrasco was one of the best players in her team Cy Woods in their first-round 3-2 loss to Cougar Bracket winners Kingwood. She played three positions for them - right midfielder, right back and center back - and made an impact in each of them. Carrasco has solid defensive skills and used her excellent positioning and reading of the game to make stops. When playing right back, she offered a lot offensively, making plays in wider positions, such as the one that resulted in the team's second goal, and also coming inside to find passes in behind the backline. In the second half, with Cy Woods trailing by one goal and Kingwood playing a man down, she moved to center back and had a major role in the team's buildup, connecting short and long passes out of the back.

Cy Woods vs. Kingwood

Kristiansen was part of Cougar Bracket winners Kingwood, and I saw her in action in a 3-2 win over Cy Woods. Typically a right back, she had a much more offensive role for most of the match, operating almost as a winger for her team. The role maximized her offensive skills as Kristiansen participated in two of the team's three goals and almost scored a fourth near the end. She was very intelligent in exploring the space, making smart runs behind the backline, sending dangerous crosses into the penalty box and coming inside to finish chances when she sensed an opportunity. After her team had a player sent off, she contributed more defensively and did a solid job shutting down her side of the field.

Cy Woods vs. Kingwood

Maldonado had a solid shift with Summer Creek in their 4-0 win over Langham Creek in the Consolation round of the Warrior Bracket. She started the match playing as a right midfielder, but then reversed to her original left back position and was among the team's most important offensive options. She combined very well with midfielder Chelsea Flowers and frequently got to the end line to send dangerous crosses into the penalty box. Maldonado also did a very good job with her high press, winning possession in the attacking half on several occasions and generating good scoring opportunities for her team.

Summer Creek vs. Langham Creek

Berrios helped her Atascocita team come from behind to beat Friendswood 3-1 in the semifinals of the Falcon Bracket. She started the match at right back and was very active offensively, constantly appearing as an option on the right and connecting good passes out of the back. The outside back was very good defensively, playing with great energy, making the right choices and winning duels in different spots on the field. She moved to left during the second half and continued to dominate defensively, but limited her offensive contributions.

Atascocita vs. Friendswood

A freshman, O'Neal appeared well in the Falcon Bracket semifinals, when her team Friendswood fell to Atascocita 3-1. She played as a left back and had great success in her defensive actions. Tall and physical, she used her body well to win duels and control the space, not allowing much to happen in her area of the field. O'Neal also displayed good quality on the ball and vision, connecting good passes out of the back. A left back, she played with tremendous energy and was very active on both sides of the ball. Offensively, Jensen did a very good job with her overlaps, timing her runs well and staying onside as she attacked the space. She also displayed good accuracy when taking corner kicks.
