The high school soccer season got immediately back in action in the state of Texas after the New Year celebrations, and every day multiple matches are held in the Lone Star State as teams prepare for the start of district play in a couple of weeks.

For another season, Prep Soccer Texas will be following the action closely as it unfolds in the Houston area, attending multiple matches a week and providing the best coverage in the state, with Photo Galleries, Match Reports and Social Media posts that will help increase the exposure of teams and players in the Lone Star State.

On Friday, January 2, we covered the non-district match involving the Tompkins Falcons and the Cypress Woods Wildcats at Rhodes Stadium. With two early goals and a late one, the Falcons triumphed 3-0.

Tompkins vs. Cy Woods - Photos

https://www.instagram.com/p/DTEJpD-jy65/?img_index=1

Tompkings got on the board in the third minute, when senior midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='347326' first='Eloy' last='Ferrer'] took a corner kick on the right and senior forward [player_tooltip player_id='15886' first='Brayden' last='Lehner'] rose above everyone else to head it into the back of the net. They doubled their lead in the ninth minute, when Ferrer quickly took a free kick near the midfield line and found sophomore midfielder Samuel Perez open behind the backline to score.

After getting a pair of assists, Ferrer ended the night with the most beautiful goal of the match. After a give-and-go with Lehner in the 35th minute of the second half, he fired an inch-perfect shot from 35 yards out, sending the ball right into the upper corner.

Players of the Match

The senior midfielder was easily the best player on the field, orchestrating Tompkins' offensive actions and getting involved in the team's three goals, scoring one himself and assisting in the other two. Ferrer played the No. 10 role with impressive intelligence, often drifting from the center of the field to the right to have space to get on the ball. He was excellent in possession, hitting perfectly-weighted diagonal passes, most notably the one that resulted in Perez's goal, and taking great care of the ball, rarely losing it. Ferrer scored an incredible goal with a shot that combined remarkable power and precision to seal the Falcons' victory.

The sophomore was extremely dynamic in midfield for Tompkins and had a strong performance, combining impressive intensity and quality on the ball. Perez covered a lot of ground in the center of the field, working hard off the ball and consistently getting involved when his team had possession. He didn't keep much of a position on offense, often drifting wide to use his pace and dribbling to make plays on the wings. Perez did very well to score his goal, timing his run behind the backline perfectly and being very aggressive and direct when he got the ball.

The senior forward had a productive shift, getting a goal and an assist and making a strong offensive impact for Tompkins. Lehner scored an early goal off a header, one of his strengths, which helped the Falcons set the tone and take control of the match within the first minutes. He didn't have another great chance to score, but continued to be dangerous and get involved in the team's attacking plays. Lehner demonstrated great quality on the ball to drop deeper and set his teammates up in the final third, and also made some diagonal runs to get on the end of long passes.

Tompkins' offense was in top form against Cy Woods, but the team's defensive system also stood out with a clean sheet, and the junior center back had a big role in it. Playing on the left side of the team's back three, Welch was very firm and extremely dependable with his defensive actions. He used his big frame extremely well to win duels and also to stop through balls from getting behind him. Welch also displayed calm and quality on the ball, often stepping into the attacking half to support the team's offense and delivering accurate long passes with his left foot.

The junior was very active in the center of the field and had an intense and efficient performance for the Falcons. Veracoechea played at the base of Tompkins' midfield and did a good job of shielding the team's backline with his high-energy game. His reading ability allowed him to not only intercept passes, but also get first to second balls, helping his team quickly recover possession. Veracoechea also did solid work on the ball, moving it quickly and efficiently finding teammates out wide or in more advanced positions.

The senior was Cy Woods' most talented and dangerous offensive player in the match and helped the team have a solid presence in the attacking half after a difficult start. Paredes started the match as a midfielder, trying to organize the team's attacking plays from deeper, but raised his level when he moved up to forward. He worked well with his back to the goal and also made nice runs behind the backline, offering passing options to his teammates. Paredes fired some good shots on target in the second half, most notably a free kick that went just a few inches too high.

The junior was a standout in Cy Woods' backline, being fairly successful with his defensive efforts and keeping things under control in his zone. Perez lined up as a left back and didn't struggle much with his defending, winning duels and forcing opponents inside.
