The San Diego Surf program is no stranger to national championships, as they are one of the most decorated youth soccer clubs in the country.  With 20 national titles since their inception, the last 2, or back-to-back Nattys, are something special.

San Diego Surf's player development pathways offer elite players a pipeline into the U.S. Youth National Team pools as well as top-level NCAA Division 1 colleges and Power 4 programs.

The elite players can also benefit from the NWSL development connection with the likes of San Diego Wave FC.  Without a doubt, the 2011G squad is continuing its upward trend and definitely gunning for a three-peat.

I was fortunate to gain valuable insights from the consecutive national title run by Kensington McGrath Kensington McGrath Kensington McGrath 5'4" | F/M YSC Academy | 2030 State CA , who goes by the name KB.  She is one of a few elite players who also attended our Prep Soccer SoCal ID Camp during the past summer.  Her technical skills in the area of finishing are a sight to see.  I really liked how she read the defenses and made adjustments with high-percentage shots while creating quick one-touch or cutbacks to get the ball to her strong side.  KB slipped through defenders and made precise passes to players making diagonal runs.  Her reputation as a clutch performer in title matches is undeniably at best considered brilliant.  During the 2025 Title Match, she scored a brace to win the title while receiving tournament player of the year honors.  In the most recent championship match, she was involved in all three of their goals while assisting the game-winning goal and scoring another brace.

Here are the questions for Kensington and her responses:

3. Key opponent / team faced in the Final

We played Slammers HBK Koge G2012 ECNL in the National Championship Final. It was a really competitive match, and everyone on our team knew we had to bring our best.

4. Best memories of the match or season

It was our first ECNL season, so there were so many great memories - like making posters for each other at our first ECNL showcase and team bonding events like the Haunted Trail. I felt excited, proud and honestly a little overwhelmed. Winning the championship gave me a lot of confidence and felt like confirmation that all the work we had put in was paying off. Lifting that trophy with my teammates made me want to keep working even harder and see how far we could take it.

2025-2026 2nd National Championship U14

1. Information on the 2nd Championship — age group, team and key players

I was in the U14 age group playing for San Diego Surf G2012 ECNL. Some of the key players on our team were Stella Green Stella Green Stella Green 5'4" | M/D | 2030 State CA , Stella Boyd Stella Boyd 5'10" | GK La Costa Canyon | 2030 State CA , Amelie Wagner Amelie Wagner Amelie Wagner 5'4" | M/F | 2031 CA and Sienna. We continue to have a really special group because everyone is willing to sacrifice for the team and push each other to be better.

2. Coaches

Our coach was Coach Andres Deza. He believed in us throughout the entire season and helped us stay focused on our goal of winning another National Championship.

3. Key opponent / team faced in the Final

We faced Slammers HBK Koge G2012 ECNL again in the National Championship Final. Having the opportunity to play them again in the Final made it feel like we had come full circle from the year before.

4. Best memories of the match or season

This championship was probably the most meaningful one for me because of everything I had to overcome to get there. I suffered a severe collarbone injury, had surgery and missed more than three months of soccer. I worked really hard to get back, and somehow my first full game back was the National Championship Final.

Being able to score two goals in the final and help us win another championship was an incredible feeling. It was also really special because Coach Andres had never won a National Championship before, and I wanted so badly to help him experience that moment. Looking around and celebrating with my teammates after the final whistle is something I'll never forget.

5. Feeling when lifting the trophy

This one felt like redemption. After everything I had been through with my injury, there were definitely moments when I wondered when I would feel like myself again. To come back and have my first full game be the championship final, score a brace and win the trophy with my teammates was almost surreal.

I felt determined, focused, passionate and incredibly happy. It reminded me that setbacks don't define you — how you respond to them does.
