San Diego, California, is the next stop for club teams from around the nation as the city is set to host the Playoffs from June 25 to July 1 at the Surf Sports Complex.
As many as 336 teams from the U13 to the U19 divisions will make the trip to California to compete this week and among them are several sides from Texas. As the Lone Star State clubs prepare to deliver in the biggest moment season, let’s take a look at some of the most talented players from the state set to take the field in San Diego. We begin with the goalkeepers:
Dylan Prachyl
Dylan Prachyl
Prachyl is the starting goalkeeper of the Solar SC Academy 09 team that finished at the top of the Texas Conference with 14 wins, two losses and one tie and are set to face Concorde Fire Platinum, Pateadores and Beach FC in their first matches in the Champions League playoffs in San Diego. He uses his length well, making point-blank saves with efficiency and having great success every time she steps outside of the goal to catch crosses inside the penalty box. Prachyl is not one to rush to make decisions between the posts, getting a good look at the situation before acting, which limits his errors. She’s also very good at putting the ball back in play, connecting with teammates with precise throws and displaying great passing range out of the back.
Elijah Gradilla
Elijah Gradilla
Gradilla’s side BVBIA 08 finished eighth in the Texas Conference with seven wins, three losses and seven ties and will play in the Champions League this week – they start against Florida West FC, Slammers FC and NCFC Youth Academy. He’s very technical and efficient between the posts and his game at times goes unnoticed because of how smoothly he handles his duties. Gradilla benefits from his positioning to make saves without the need of major dives, but has the athleticism to make them when necessary. He also controls the penalty box with efficiency when dealing with crosses and can connect solid passes with his feet.
Nicolas Macouzet
Nicolas Macouzet
With Macouzet in goal, Rise SC 08 advanced to the Champions League playoffs with a seventh-place finish in the Texas Conference with eight wins, five losses and four ties – they are set to play San Diego Surf, Sporting Nebraska and Atlanta Fire United in their first matches in California. A tall goalkeeper, he uses his frame well to get to the ball and is very explosive with his dives. His length also helps Macouzet to deal with crosses and he very rarely makes a misstep when navigating the penalty box. The goalkeeper is also very vocal and connects well with the defenders in front of him.
Kinser will be in goal for Dallas Texans Academy 07 in the Champions League playoffs after they ranked third in the Texas Conference with a campaign of 12 wins, two losses and three ties. Scheduled to play against the Minnesota Thunders, the Pittsburgh Riverhounds and FC Stars, they will count on their athletic goalkeeper to step up and make saves when they need him to. Kinzer covers the goal well with his big frame, but is also very quick and explosive to get to the ground to make stops – his size also helps him to take up space from opponents in 1v1 situations. The goalkeeper is often seen igniting quick transition plays with long punts right after he makes a save.
Highlights
Zachary Hertzberg
Zachary Hertzberg
Hertzberg plays for the Lonestar SC Red 06/05 team that ranked second in the Texas Conference with 13 wins, two losses and two ties and will play in the Champions League, starting against Maryland United. He’s very agile between the posts and that gives him the ability to make some acrobatic saves, especially with shots that target the upper corners. Hertzberg also uses his legs well to make stops, especially in 1v1 situations. Putting the ball back in play with quick and efficient throws is another of his strengths.
