Prep Soccer Texas will be following the battle for a place in the postseason in the Houston area, covering multiple matches every week and featuring the top performers in each of them. On Friday, the last day of January, we followed the District 19 Derby between the Seven Lakes Spartans and the Tompkins Lady Falcons, in Katy.

Even playing on the road, Tompkins were on the front foot since the start of the match, dominating possession and keeping the ball in the attacking half. They almost scored in a corner kick, but the shot of junior [player_tooltip player_id='159503' first='Hayden' last='Lasida'] was stopped. The Lady Falcons didn't have a really good chance until the final of the first half, when junior [player_tooltip player_id='55783' first='Rhegan' last='Coombs'] made a great run in the middle and finished it with a beautiful left-footed shot that found the upper corner, to give the visitors the lead.

Coombs almost scored a similar goal at the start of the second half, but this time her shot hit the crossbar. With some lineup chances, the Spartans were more offensive in the second half and were dangerous with some runs by freshman [player_tooltip player_id='214146' first='Bridget' last='Asekomhe']. Tompkins had some nice transition plays and in one of them, senior Jenna Lightle dribbled the goalkeeper, but couldn't find a good angle to finish. Near the end, Coombs hit another left-footed banger to confirm the team's road win.

The victory keeps the Lady Falcons in first place in the district, now with five wins and one tie - they have a 9-0-1 record for the season. The Spartans have three wins and two losses in district play and are at 4-4-2 for the season.

The junior forward not only decided the match with two beautiful goals from outside the penalty box, but was also Tompkins' main offensive weapon. Her teammates looked for Coombs a lot and she always delivered, managing to push the ball forward and helping set up their offense. She was nearly unstoppable with her runs, keeping great control of the ball and changing directions very quickly, and, on most of the occasions they managed to stop her, the Spartans had to throw two defenders at her to do so. Coombs had a lot of freedom in the final third and used it well, getting into nice spots to make plays and feed her teammates with great passes. She scored two goals with beautiful left-footed shots and was very close to getting a hat-trick, but saw another amazing finish hit the crossbar.

Johnson anchored Tompkins' backline and led her team to a clean sheet against a strong opponent. Playing in the center of the team's back three, she was a stud defensively, clearing crosses from the penalty box and thriving with her positioning and mobility to cover her teammates. Johnson was matched up with Seven Lakes' freshman [player_tooltip player_id='214146' first='Bridget' last='Asekomhe'], a quick and technical forward, and didn't allow her any space to get a shot on target. The junior also displayed great power in precision in her right leg, sending accurate long balls into Seven Lakes' penalty box in long-distance free kicks.

Originally a defender, Lasida played in midfield and her intensity and quality helped the Lady Falcons dominate the center of the field. Lasida covered a lot of ground and was very active at winning duels, blocking most of the Spartans' attempts to create through the middle. The junior also did a solid job in possession, hitting nice long passes and making efficient shifts, and almost scored in the first half, firing a shot after the team executed a nice corner kick routine.

After playing as a right back in her freshman season, Sprayberry appeared in midfield for Tompkins against Seven Lakes and had a very solid match, especially on the defensive side of the ball. She played a few different roles in midfield for them and was always very efficient and reliable. Sprayberry stood out with her positioning and on multiple occasions made key defensive plays, inside and outside the penalty box. She also did a fine job in possession, taking good care of the ball and not turning it over.

The freshman indicated she'll be a nice addition to an already talented Tompkins team by playing a solid match against one of the top teams in the region. Homs played on the right of Tompkins' back three and held her own against the talented and dangerous forwards who targeted her. She used her physical tools very well to win duels and was resilient on defense, never giving up and playing with great energy.

The senior was definitely Seven Lakes' most active player in the match and was involved in most of what the Spartans did. Reed started the match as a left wing back and appeared very often in the final third in the first half, connecting well with her teammates and helping them create chances. She moved to midfield in the second half and got even more involved in the team's playmaking. Reed did a good job with her runs through the middle, which on a few occasions got Tompkins' defense out of shape, and distributed the ball well.

The freshman was Seven Lakes' most dangerous attacker and never stopped trying to make things happen up top. She spent some time on the wings and then some at center forward and made some dangerous runs on and off the ball. Asekomhe also connected well with forward Anuhea Aalona and was always a target for thrown-ins and long free kicks. She didn't have a really good chance to score but made Tompkins' defenders work hard to contain her.

Callahan had a challenging night, with Tompkins not allowing her much space to operate in the center of the field, but still did a solid job, finding quick passes to help the team keep possession. She didn't get in good spots around the penalty box to make a difference, but tried to move in the center of the field to offer a passing option to her teammates and made good decisions every time she got on the ball. Callahan was also very active defensively and helped her team fight in midfield.
