It was another beautiful day in Los Altos Hills, California, for Week #5 Spring ECNL soccer matchups. With my second match of the day, [program_tooltip program_id='283433' first='Placer' last='United'] G09 took on the MVLA G09 at the Foothill College Soccer Field. It was a relatively warm 70 degrees around game time.

MVLA came in at 1st place with a record of 12-1-6, and Placer was in 9th place at 3-13-6. Both teams played a previous match in September, and MVLA barely won the match at 1-0. MVLA has an impressive defensive record, as they have 10 shutouts coming into this match (19 games). The goalkeeping pair of [player_tooltip player_id='111087' first='Anneliese' last='Braun'] and [player_tooltip player_id='111094' first='Sophia' last='Malloy'] are not only a dynamic duo for their club team, but they are also paired up at Saint Francis, the team that won the treble. Yes, that's right, they recently won the WCAL, CCS Division 1, and NorCal Division Championships. Their high school coach, Carlos Barboza, whom I nominated as California Coach of the Year and possibly National Coach of the Year one day, is also one of the team's admins. This connection definitely places MVLA in a really good spot to run the table during the playoffs.

If you were looking for a close match this time around, you would be disappointed or excited to see a total of seven scores. Right off the bat, in the 7th minute, Olivia Peters received a pass from [player_tooltip player_id='111090' first='Teagan' last='Kaefer']. Peters then splits two defenders just at the top of the 18 and goes left before sending the ball to the far post. MVLA's second goal was also scored by Peters, as methodical passing and patience were the keys to success. The ball was played back to CB [player_tooltip player_id='111097' first='Chloe' last='Miller'] twice before it was sent to Peters, who then angled in from the touchline before she hit a chip shot over the GK's outstretched hands.

[player_tooltip player_id='111096' first='Maya' last='Meltz'] got goal #3. MVLA got a win-back at their 18, then they started their counterattack. [player_tooltip player_id='146242' first='Allison' last='Park'] made a perfect slip pass to Meltz, who ran behind a defender to meet the ball just inside the box before ripping a shot past the goalkeeper. It was another great display of precise passes as 7 different players had touches.

Goal #4 for MVLA came by way of a penalty kick (PK) in the closing minutes of the first half. [player_tooltip player_id='111093' first='Katherine' last='Lu'] goes to the low left corner as the ball glances off the fingertips of the GK. That ended the half at 4-0 MVLA.

In the second half, Olivia Peters gets her hat trick. [player_tooltip player_id='111089' first='Kaylie' last='Giusti'] gets the assist as she slips a clean pass to Peters at the top of the 18. All Peters had to do was take one step before sending another rocket shot past the goalkeeper.

[player_tooltip player_id='111096' first='Maya' last='Meltz'] got her second goal of the day to make it 6-0 MVLA. The ball was originally crossed to the penalty area by a corner kick. The ball was sent out but was quickly put back into play just in front of the goalkeeper. Meltz did not back down, and she allowed the ball to bounce once before she headed the ball past the goalkeeper.

Just as I thought MVLA was gonna get another clean sheet, Lucia Hoffman gets Placer's lone goal in the final 10 minutes of the match. Although it was not enough for a comeback, I really liked the support the Placer fans gave their players for continuing to play under constant pressure from the MVLA attack.

Other standout players for Placer were [player_tooltip player_id='111222' first='Evangeline' last='Reid'] and Leah Klug. Reid played as a forward and applied high pressure. She also dropped back to the midfield to help send crosses over the top to get the offense moving. Her strength was receiving the ball and making quick turns with a defender on her hip. Her passing skills and athleticism allowed her team to make runs on goal.

Klug played primarily on defense. She made a lot of clears from inside the 18, and she never backed down from any runs going through the center. She plays a physical style, yet she is composed and makes clean tackles. Her ability to step into lanes and cut off diagonal runs kept a few goals off the board.

Lastly, MVLA's three-back system of [player_tooltip player_id='111097' first='Chloe' last='Miller'], [player_tooltip player_id='111090' first='Teagan' last='Kaefer'], and [player_tooltip player_id='206659' first='Avery' last='Edson'] was nearly perfect. Aside from allowing one goal to sneak by, they locked down the defensive third, and they started a lot of counterattacks, with a few resulting in goals. [player_tooltip player_id='111097' first='Chloe' last='Miller'], a U.S. Youth National Team call-up, was at times the lone back, which allowed Kaefer and Edson to make runs at goal. The numbers-up approach created a numerical advantage, which definitely worked in their favor.

The match ended in a 6-1 final, with MVLA getting their 13th win of the season. Looking forward to the [program_tooltip program_id='283257' first='Bay' last='Area Surf'] team at MVLA in a few weeks, as the current #1 and #2 teams will be squaring off with bragging rights and playoff positioning on the line.
