The MLS Next League returned to action after its winter break, and teams from all over the country fight to get wins and qualify for MLS Next Flex.

On Saturday, February 28, the [program_tooltip program_id='283659' first='IDEA' last='Toros Futbol Academy'] and the [program_tooltip program_id='283639' first='Dallas' last='Hornets'] faced off at Blue Ridge Park in Houston, and Prep Soccer Texas was there to follow their duel in the U19 age group. A penalty kick shot converted by forward [player_tooltip player_id='88509' first='Pierre' last='Mazzawi'] was the difference for the Hornets, who triumphed 1-0.

IDEA Toros U19 vs. [program_tooltip program_id='283639' first='Dallas' last='Hornets'] U19 - Photos

https://www.instagram.com/p/DVeGY0jDusp/?img_index=1

The game-winning goal was scored in the last minute of the first half, when Mazzawi was taken down inside the box and took the penalty kick, sending the Toros' goalkeeper the wrong way. The Toros had a great chance to score on a penalty kick of their own in the 11th minute of the second half, but midfielder Jose Briones put too much power into his shot and missed it.

Players of the Match

With the Hornets not having a true striker, Mazzawi was their most advanced player and was tasked with occupying the space inside the penalty box for them. The forward did that with intense and intelligent movement, picking the best ways to hurt the Toros' backline on and off the ball. Mazzawi made some diagonal runs into the box and, in one of them, he was taken down, showing calm and composure to convert the penalty kick. The forward also did well when he dropped to get on the ball, combining efficiently with his teammates, and when he drifted wide, consistently beating defenders off the dribble.

Orozco had a strong performance in his role as a box-to-box midfielder for the Hornets. He was tasked with getting the ball to the team's attacking players in the final third and was very good at it, combining excellent passing and the ability to progress with the ball. Orozco was very intelligent with his passing and movement off the ball, offering great support to the team's offense, and was very difficult to dispossess when driving the ball upfield. The midfielder also showed a good work rate off the ball, helping his team press high and defend in the center of the field.

Cassar played on the left side of the Hornets' midfield and was heavily involved in the team's playmaking. He did a good job of coming inside to combine with his teammates and took great care of the ball, connecting most of his passes and making great choices with his distribution, while also attempting some direct passes behind the backline. The midfielder also showed great quality in set pieces, providing excellent service from free kicks and corner kicks. Cassar also contributed defensively, tracking back and helping close the space out wide for the Hornets.

Rackley was one of the standouts in the Hornets' backline that earned a clean sheet. A right back, he was a constant offensive option for his team, pushing up on the right side and making plays out wide. Rackley got a yellow card very early in the match, but managed to play through it, making smart defensive plays and showing great positioning to intercept long passes with his head. The outside back also helped the Hornets keep the ball in the final third and run the clock down in the final minutes, earning throw-ins and corner kicks.

Despite not seeing much of the ball in the first half, Arreguin was the Toros' most dangerous attacking player in the match. Playing as an inverted right winger, he was fed with long balls and showed great hustle to fight to get to the end of them. He had some success in 1v1 plays, beating opponents off the dribble and taking the ball into dangerous spots, either out wide or bringing it inside. Arreguin drew his team's penalty kick after making a diagonal run from the right and almost scored in a free-kick shot far from the box, which hit the crossbar.

Playing as a left-side center back, Alonzo had a solid performance and helped the Toros handle the Hornets' dynamic offense for most of the match. The defender was excellent at reading plays and consistently stepped up to intercept passes. Alonzo also did well when defending the penalty box, winning several duels in the air and making important stops on the ground. He also showed confidence and quality to lead the team's buildup, connecting good passes out of the back and gaining yards with some runs on the ball.

Reyna was the Toros' striker for most of the match. Despite not being very tall or physical, he did a good job of getting to the end of long passes and attempting to make plays in the final third.
