The 2026-2027 MLS Next season is officially underway, and between now and June, the top boys' teams in the country will go against each other week in, week out, fighting for victories on the field.

Prep Soccer Texas continues to follow the league in the Lone Star State, providing the best coverage in the region, with match recaps, performance recaps, photo galleries, and social media posts that highlight the hard work and impressive talent of local players.

On Saturday, September 19, we attended our first official matches of the season, and among the duels we got to watch, it was the meeting between the [program_tooltip program_id='283658' first='Houston' last='Rangers'] and [program_tooltip program_id='283624' first='Capital' last='City SC'] in the U17 age group, held at Paul D Rushing Park, in Katy. Despite playing on the road, Capital City celebrated a hard-fought 2-1 win.

https://www.instagram.com/p/Ddgw2OYDmGB/?img_index=1

The Rangers scored the first goal of the match in the 43rd minute of the first half, when midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='321816' first='Simon' last='Rico'] delivered an excellent through ball to forward Jean Carlos Cabezas, who sent it into the back of the net with a low driven shot. The home team seemed even more in control right before the halftime whistle, when their opponents were reduced to ten men after forward Diego Valverde received a red card.

Capital City resisted during the second half and capitalized on two transition plays to turn things around. In the 37th minute, they took advantage of a turnover by the Rangers to get the ball to substitute forward Nelson Villanueva, who converted with a cross shot. Four minutes later, midfielder [player_tooltip player_id='386238' first='Joel' last='Emagueu'] won the ball in the center of the field and hit a diagonal pass to Gabriel Gallegos, who calmly slotted it past the Rangers' goalkeeper to score the game-winning goal.

Players of the Match

Emagueu's hard work and leadership in the center of the field were instrumental in Capital City's comeback win. The center midfielder covered a lot of ground defensively, and his ability to keep opponents under pressure was invaluable, especially when the team was down a man. Emagueu also took great care of the ball, moving it intelligently from the center of the field and supporting the attack with some runs. He was outstanding in the play that led to the team's game-winning goal, stepping up to press at the right time and quickly identifying and executing an accurate diagonal pass that found Gallegos in a great position to score.

Sapp anchored Capital City's backline, and his strong play helped the team keep its deficit at a minimum despite playing half of the match down a man. He was very good at defending the penalty box, especially in the air, and was very firm on the tackle, winning many 50-50 balls. Sapp's ability to defend 1v1 in space allowed for Capital City to push forward looking for goals in the second half and leave the backline more exposed. The center back also passed the ball well and appeared well in the attacking penalty box, winning duels in the air to generate chances.

Buckingham's strong shift between the posts helped keep Capital City in the game and then secure their victory. The goalkeeper used his length very well between the posts and couldn't have done any better to avoid the Rangers' goal. Buckingham was very reliable with his actions and made a couple of impressive stops, most notably on a free-kick shot from [player_tooltip player_id='211226' first='Sebastian' last='Serna'] in the first half. He was put to work in the final minutes of the match, when the Rangers pushed for an equalizer, and did very well, being particularly important with his ability to leave his spot and claim or punch crosses.

Gallegos came in during the second half, and his presence up top was one of the things that helped change the game in Capital City's favor. He brought a great deal of energy to the team, working hard both on and off the ball, and helping to offset the team's disadvantage. Gallegos played more to the right side of the offense and consistently found space to operate there, making good runs on and off the ball. The forward showed calm and composure in the final third to score the goal that decided the match in the last few minutes of action.

Rico had a strong performance in midfield and was among the most active players on the Rangers' side. He was very active at shielding the team's backline and had good success in physical duels, dispossessing opponents and making stops in the center of the field. Rico also distributed the ball well, intelligently picking his passes and connecting the vast majority of them. He did a good job of supporting the offense, too, making good runs on the right side, and set up the team's goal with a perfect pass behind the backline.

Cabezas scored the Rangers' goal in the match in what truly was his only real opportunity inside the penalty box. The striker moved well in the final third, consistently making runs and drifting wide, and was a constant option to his teammates. Cabezas worked well with his back to the goal, too, serving as a target for throw-ins and long balls. The forward showed good energy to play defense and was very active at pressing opposing defenders when they had the ball.
