Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
Smithson will be in action with the Challenge SC ECNL G09 side. Between using her length extremely well and displaying great reflexes between the posts, she gets to cover a large area in the goal. Smithson is hard to score on in 1v1 situations because she leaves the goal very quickly and uses her legs extremely well to cover more area and take up space from opposing attackers. She’s very consistent and reliable with her performances and does well when dealing with crosses.

Smithson impressed me during the ECNL playoffs with Challenge SC. She made a ridiculously good save in first half against Minnesota Thunder Academy in the Championship tilt. Did well coming off her line in the second half to stop a breakaway chance. Needs to do better on organizing her defense and controlling the box on set pieces. She is getting crowded and having a hard time getting the freedom to track the ball and move her feet. Overall, there is a lot to like about her game and the quality is there for an early contributor at the next level.

Smithson was the starting goalkeeper of Kingwood Park in her freshman high school season and also plays for Challenge SC 09 in the ECNL. She’s very long and has excellent reflexes, a combination that allows her to cover a large area of the goal with great efficiency. Smithson is very reliable and she doesn’t take any chances with difficult shots, preferring to deflect them out of bounds than risking giving up a rebound. The goalkeeper does a very good job when she leaves the goal to punch crosses and also puts the ball back in play efficiently with her punts.

Smithson will be with Challenge SC G09 when they meet Indy Eleven Pro Academy, Michigan Hawks Magic and Concorde Fire Premier in Dallas. She immediately became a starter for her high school team Kingwood Park as a freshman and earned 11 clean sheets in the first 14 matches of the season. Smithson is very long, but also very agile and she uses that combination to get to balls shot to the upper corner. She’s also very effective when using her legs to make stops in 1v1 situations, enlarging her area. Smithson is also very calm in goal and has the mental toughness it takes to sustain long periods of pressure between the posts.
