Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
An extremely technical and intelligent outside back, Jones captains FC Dallas and is a very important player for them. Capable of playing as a left back in a line of four or as a wingback in front of three defenders, he stands out for his quality and quickness in possession. Jones is capable of manipulating the ball in a way that few players are, but one of the best things about his game is that he doesn’t need much time on the ball to make an impact, consistently connecting first-time passes and moving off the ball to get it back. He very rarely puts his foot wrong in the final third, picking the right passes and executing them perfectly – the left back is also very good at making runs behind the backline out wide and sending accurate crosses into the box. A bit undersized, Jones plays hard on defense and consistently manages to shut down more physical opponents.

Jones is a left back in the FC Dallas U15 team. An extremely technical and intelligent player, he’s an interesting offensive weapon out wide for his team, especially when playing as a wingback in front of a back three. Everything in Jones’ game is built upon his quickness, as he typically doesn’t spend much time on the ball, connecting first-time passes with great intelligence, and also does an excellent job of assessing the space in front of him and immediately moving to the right spot to get the ball back. He makes dangerous runs behind the backline on the left and is always very accurate and intentional with his crosses. Despite being undersized, Jones holds his own defensively, using his high soccer IQ to figure out how to deal with physical opponents.

Jones captained FC Dallas U15 MLS Next to a solid 3-0 victory over Mexico’s Global Sporting Club 2010. Playing as a left wingback, he had a lot of freedom to push forward and spent most of the match in the attacking half, offering his team a nice offensive option. Jones didn’t limit himself to staying wide, moving very intelligently in the final third, and popping up in great spots to facilitate plays – he rarely kept the ball, often connecting smart first-time passes that found teammates in great spots. He was also very intelligent to attack the space behind the opposing backline, consistenly getting the ball in the end line and sending nice crosses into the box.

Left back. Part of the US Youth National Team. Small. Tough kid. Hops up quickly from fouls. High engine. Lightning quick feet. Probably the most skillful outside back in the country in this class. Offers massive upside for his position as he impacts the game on both sides of the ball. Coaches love him, very coachable. Wears the captain’s armband at the club level. Smart on the ball, sharp passer. There’s a lot of positive of Jones’ game and it’s easy to see how it will translate moving forward. The question will be about size. He’s already dealing with players taking a more physical approach against him. As long as he continues to solve those challenges with his intelligence, there’s every reason to believe he will be a long time standout for FC Dallas.
