District play continues to quickly progress in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) high school soccer season in the state of Texas and, with the second round nearing its final stretch in most districts, we will soon know which teams from the Lone Star State will get to secure a spot in the playoffs.

Prep Soccer Texas will be following the battle for a place in the postseason in the Houston area, covering multiple matches every week and featuring the top performers in each of them. On Tuesday, February 25, we followed a big District 19 match between the Jordan Warriors and the Seven Lakes Spartans in Katy. Playing on the road, Seven Lakes won 2-1, beating Jordan for the second time in the season

Photos: Jordan vs. Seven Lakes

The Spartans started the match on the front foot and scored their two goals in a matter of minutes. In the first of them, freshman [player_tooltip player_id='214146' first='Bridget' last='Asekomhe'] made a great play through the left and the ball found sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='232540' first='Sienna' last='Marchitello'] inside the penalty box to score. A few minutes later, Asekomhe drew a foul on the side of the penalty box, which senior Madison Holland converted. Jordan's goal also happened in the first half and it came on a free kick too, with senior Ashley Hernandez hitting the upper corner.

Needing goals, Jordan controlled possession in the second half. The team had a dangerous shot from distance with freshman Natalia Villarreal, but the ball went over the net. Junior [player_tooltip player_id='26414' first='Alexandria' last='Ledbetter'] had arguably the Warriors best chance when she made a great run behind the backline, but she stopped on Seven Lakes' junior goalkeeper [player_tooltip player_id='207298' first='Hailey' last='Koop']. The Spartans also had a chance to score a third goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Taylor Thompson saved senior Victoria Ott's header.

@JordanGSoccer make a strong push at the end but @SLGirlsSoccer7 preserve their lead and secure a 2-1 road win. She slowed down a little bit after Jordan adjusted their defense on her, but continued to be dangerous, especially in the second half, with the Warriors pushing forward and allowing her the space she needed to make runs. Asekomhe spent time at both wings and also at center forward and consistently made good decisions in the final third, having success in solo runs and also combining well with her teammates.

The sophomore had a solid shift at defensive midfielder, helping the Spartans dominate the central area of the field and forcing the Warriors to play wide. Lumpkin was very active defensively and covered a lot of ground in front of her team's penalty box. Because of her excellent positioning, she was always in good spots to make interceptions and she also got to make tackles and blocks in what could have been dangerous plays around the penalty box. Lumpkin also did solid work on the ball, remaining calm in possession and, on some occasions, getting the ball under pressure and intelligently finding teammates in better spots.

The senior center back led the Spartans' defensive system and did an excellent job of dominating the penalty box - the team only conceded in a free kick. Orellana had junior Isabella Labay by her side for most of the match and senior [player_tooltip player_id='54871' first='Kennedy' last='Reed'] for the rest of it and displayed great chemistry with both. She was very firm in winning duels and getting tackles in front of the penalty box, but was also very well-positioned when she needed to cover her teammates. Orellana's quality on the ball was also of great value for her team as she was very effective both when connecting short passes or when playing long, especially in goal kicks.

The junior played with great intensity in midfield and helped the Spartans control the flow of the game. Aalona was very coordinated with fellow midfielders [player_tooltip player_id='167843' first='Camryn' last='Lumpkin'] and Chloe Callahan as the three worked extremely well on both sides of the ball. She covered a lot of ground in midfield and won many duels, on some occasions quickly starting transition plays. She didn't step in the penalty box and wasn't as goal-dangerous as she typically is, but was still very efficient at feeding her team's forwards with great passes.

The junior forward was Jordan's main weapon to hurt Seven Lakes as, with limited space in the middle, her runs out wide proved to be pretty effective. Ledbetter displayed a great work rate and never stopped giving her teammates passing options, drifting to both sides and also making runs behind the backline. She got to the end line on many occasions and sent good crosses into the penalty box, but her teammates didn't get there to finish them. Ledbetter had a good chance to level the score in the second half, making an extremely well-timed run behind the backline, but couldn't get her shot off goalkeeper [player_tooltip player_id='207298' first='Hailey' last='Koop'].

The junior started the match at left back, but with less than ten minutes was moved to the right to contain Seven Lakes' forward Bridget Asekomhe. The change was pretty effective as Katz won the first few duels and settled well in the new spot. She used her physicality extremely well and had a fun battle with Asekomhe, winning most of the duels and doing a good job of keeping her out of the penalty box most of the time. Katz also pushed forward constantly, overlapping very well and engaging in combination plays with her teammates.

Playing as an attacking midfielder, Cleary did a good job with the limited space she had to work in the final third. Her movement off the ball was very intelligent and helped her find good spots to make plays and feed Ledbetter with great through balls. She also did a good job of creating space with quick dribbles. Clearly was also effective a pressing opponents and won the ball in good spots in the attacking half on a couple of occasions.

District play continues to quickly progress in the University Interscholastic League (UIL) high school soccer season in the state of Texas and, with the second round nearing its final stretch in most districts, we will soon know which teams from the Lone Star State will get to secure a spot in the playoffs.
