The [program_tooltip program_id='283312' first='Davis' last='Legacy'] and [program_tooltip program_id='283257' first='Bay' last='Area Surf'] matchup was one of the most exciting matches I've ever covered. Three back-to-back-to-back top-level matches from some of the best teams in Northern California. It wasn't a scorcher as far as the heat was concerned, but the players on both sides definitely brought the fire. March 15 was the opening week of the Spring 2025 ECNL (Elite Clubs National League) season. Many of the players featured are D1 commits, and some are national team players. It was a beautiful day in San Jose, CA, at the Kathleen MacDonald High School Soccer Field. The facilities and fields are top-level.

Starting with the G07 match, which featured an impressive program with 22 D1 commits, the [program_tooltip program_id='283257' first='Bay' last='Area Surf'] team was stacked with top-tier players. The standouts for Surf were Duke commit [player_tooltip player_id='33320' first='Jocelyn' last='Travers'] (2025) and [player_tooltip player_id='99198' first='Savannah' last='Leifried'] (2027), who played up for this match. On the Davis team, it was Oregon commit [player_tooltip player_id='19970' first='Miya' last='Alamares'] (2025) and [player_tooltip player_id='54279' first='Daniela' last='Ghibanescu'] (2025).

Speaking of national players, [player_tooltip player_id='33320' first='Jocelyn' last='Travers'], Prep Soccer's #3 nationally ranked player, #1 in CA, and #1 in position, has 7 matches with Team USA U-17 WYNT. She had a solid game and demonstrated quick cutting changes in direction. Travers sliced through the defense on one play that started from around Surf's defensive third, went by a few defenders, and almost fired one off inside their 18. She got the 3rd Surf goal by receiving a pass in the attacking third and made some shifty moves before firing a powerful left-footed shot towards the opposite post. It was a really nice goal. Her play at the left wing was a sight to see, as she didn't need to use blazing speed to beat her opponents; instead, she chose to use a high soccer IQ and find open spots to deliver precise passes and to get herself and teammates into high-percentage scoring opportunities. The Duke commit will do great at the college level, and we hope and believe she can continue to rise to the senior level.

[player_tooltip player_id='99198' first='Savannah' last='Leifried'], the G08 player, was activated to play up, and she did not disappoint. She played comfortably at the midfield position and pushed up on attack while firing off a few shots on goal. Just by observing her play, it would be difficult to believe she's an 08 player. Her passing skills are top-level, as she continuously made quick and precise passes to diagonal and overlapping runners. I really liked her change of speed as she was able to close down on the ball and make hard shots on goal. Savannah is ranked by Prep Soccer as the #10 player in CA and #6 in position for the 2027 class. She is a rising star at the national level, as she was on the U-17 camp roster in 2025. We should definitely see more of her competing at that level. Leifried is also one of our Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: NorCal 2024 standouts.

Alamares was everywhere on the pitch. She played on both sides of the field, and some of her best plays were on defense. Making win-backs, defensive clears from the penalty area, and starting counter attacks were where she shined. Miya is an Oregon commit and participated in the February 2025 training camp for Team USA U-17 WYNT.

Ghibanescu played up top and created high pressure. She has some quickness when tracking back and making challenges. Her strength on offense was finding spots in the attacking third to make passes to runners slipping in the lanes.

[player_tooltip player_id='172607' first='Elyssa' last='Hernandez'], the U17 Salvadoran National Team member and Seattle University D1 commit, played a solid game at the RCB position. Hernandez has a smooth change of direction move that can twist up hard-pressing opponents. She also makes clean and precise passes to nearly any spot on the pitch. One of her signature plays is sending a long ball right to the feet of her teammates or sending it perfectly behind the defense when they are running in full stride. Her movements and closing techniques are top-notch. She just came back from her team's competition while going 1-1-1 at the World Cup Qualifying in Trinidad & Tobago. Hernandez is also one of our Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: NorCal 2024 standouts.

Abedi, the Hawaii commit, got the second goal as a teammate made a sweet change of direction play and slipped her a pass just outside the 18, and she went 1v1 with the goalkeeper before sending it to the back post. She can make quick runs on goal and her speed allows her to to make attacks from the channels, while angling in to get a higher percentage shot on goal. Her ability to slip in between defenders and find open pockets are some of her strengths.

McLin was the goalkeeper who made a lot of saves as wave after wave of surf runs kept spilling in from the channels. She showed her range and technique by taking flight on one really close top left corner shot. Aubrey wasn't going to let that one get by as she covered one of the most difficult spots to score from. She definitely kept at least 4 goals off the board. Although she has not made a commitment, she has a lot of choices and has been active in the recruiting process. Who knows, she might be another Hawaii commit or even look into UH-Hilo, another Hawaii ranked college program. Aubrey is also one of our Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: NorCal 2024 standouts.
