ECNL TX U16: Early goal gets Sting Austin past Challenge SC

After a long break during the winter and the high school soccer season, the ECNL Girls League recently returned to action, starting its final stretch before the playoffs and the Finals. Our ECNL Girls coverage resumed on Sunday, with a league match involving [program_tooltip program_id='283282' first='Challenge' last='SC'] and [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']'s U16 teams at Crossbar Academy in Tomball, in the Houston area. [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin'] are currently in fourth place in the Texas Division with 28 points (nine wins, two losses, one tie). Challenge appear in eighth place with 17 points (five wins, five losses, two ties).   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Players of the Match </h2>    Gomez was Sting's main playmaker in the match and led their offensive efforts by combining quality and intensity. She circulated everywhere in the attacking half and was constantly involved in their plays, having a big weight in their chance-creation efforts. Gomez was very hard to dispossess when she made runs on the ball, either on the wings or through the center, and also showed great passing vision, assisting Nordstrom for the game-winning goal with a well-timed and well-weighted pass behind the backline. She also had good energy to play defense, helping her team recover possession on a number of occasions.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0051_2e67fa.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355893" /></figure>    Nordstrom decided the match with [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']'s game-winning goal and was a constant threat to Challenge's backline. She made insistent runs behind the backline, keeping the opponents under pressure, and also made an impact when she dropped deeper to get on the ball and make plays. Nordstrom was excellent in the play in which she scored the only goal of the match, timing her run extremely well to remain onside and beating Challenge's goalkeeper with a great shot. She created another great opportunity for her team in the second half, but saw one of her teammates finish wide.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large is-resized"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0096_187c0f.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355911" style="width:1024px;height:auto" /></figure>    Thompson provided great stability for [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin'] at the defensive midfielder spot and was a key cog in the team's playing system. Her high-energy game and her ability to win duels contributed to the team's strong defensive performance, as she managed to shut down many of Challenge's plays through the middle. Thompson also exceled in possession, quickly scanning the field and switching the point of attack with intelligent passes. The midfielder also helped set up good transition plays with accurate long balls.     Hodge spent most of her time on the field on the left side of [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']'s attack and was one of their top offensive options in the match. She used her tremendous quality on the ball and incredibly quick feet to beat defenders on the wing and make plays, showing great moves and an impressive ability to improvise. Hodge was very hard to stop when isolated 1v1 out wide, but also created problems when she brought the ball inside to pass or finish. She also showed great defensive commitment, tracking back and showed good energy to fight for the ball.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0024_f4d328.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355882" /></figure>    Brady had a solid performance in central defense, showing great chemistry with fellow center back Rhyse Venson and helping [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin'] earn a clean sheet. She played as a left-sided center back and was impeccable with her positioning, stepping up to intercept Challenge's long-ball attempts, while also having great success in duels. Brady showed good quality on the ball and had a major role in the team's buildup, comfortably moving it upfield. She also helped set up good plays with long passes that targeted the left side of her team's attack during the first half.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0015_2b22f7.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355877" /></figure>    Burkholder had a strong performance for Challenge between the posts and kept her team in the game with some nice saves. She did a good job of quickly getting out of the goal to challenge Nordstrom when she got behind the backline in [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']'s goal, but couldn't have stopped her shot. Burkholder made an impressive save in a 1v1 play in the first half and another one in a shot from outside the box in the second half, demonstrating excellent positiong. She communicated well with her teammates the entire time and was very accurate with her punts and long passes out of the back.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0041_aa38d7.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355889" /></figure>    Boone came in during the match and helped stabilize Challenge's defensive system. The center back did a good job of dominating the area just outside her team's penalty box and stopped what could have been dangerous plays by [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']. Always well-positioned and making great use of her mobility, she held hew own on a few occasions in which she was left 1v1 with an attacker as her team pushed forward looking for an equalizer.    <figure class="wp-block-image size-large"><img src="https://prepsoccer.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/8/2026/04/2J4A0085_59edbf.jpg?w=1024" alt="" class="wp-image-355906" /></figure>    Davidson played on the right side of Challenge's attack and was their most effective offensive player. She did a good job of using her pace to make runs on and off the ball and keep [program_tooltip program_id='283497' first='Sting' last='Austin']'s backline under pressure. Davidson created what was probably Challenge's best chance in the match by winning the ball in the attacking half and taking it into the penalty box - she was tackled before finishing.
