USE THE PROMO CODE almasin30 for a discount on your first subscription

It was another beautiful day in California for some high-level soccer matchups. Mustang SC took on the Bay Area Surf in the second week of the Spring 2025 Season ECNL (Elite Clubs National League). It started with a slight overcast, yet a perfect day in San Jose, CA, at the Kathleen MacDonald High School Soccer Field. This match featured some of the top-ranked G08 players in CA and in the nation.

The standouts for Mustang SC were [player_tooltip player_id='199883' first='Mercy' last='Karson'], Belina Chavez, [player_tooltip player_id='186203' first='Katelyn' last='Wong'], and [player_tooltip player_id='268387' first='Ana' last='Pintard']. Karson was somewhat of a field general. She is the #10 ranked player in the nation, #12 in CA, and #5 in position. She commanded the back line and provided a vocal leadership role, and she definitely led by example. Her ability to direct players to the points of attack was a sight to see. Karson dominated the backline by making long clears, cutting off running lanes, and making counter runs from the back. Her passing skills are top-notch, but it was her vision and ability to anticipate soft spots on the pitch and make timed runs that caught my eye. She had an overall solid game, and it's safe to say that her #10 ranking in the nation is spot on.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904040981332377840

Belina Chavez played as a right back, and she provided an extra layer of protection in the defensive third. She showed some flashes of quick change of direction, delivered quick passes from the back or midfield, and made good defensive stops by calculating when to step into passing lanes. Her defensive efforts supported her team in stopping the high-powered Surf attack, which put up 3 goals on the board against Davis Legacy during a week one matchup. [player_tooltip player_id='186203' first='Katelyn' last='Wong'] also provided help on the defensive line as well as [player_tooltip player_id='268387' first='Ana' last='Pintard']. It was noted that the team had players feeling the effects of a cold, and thus limited playing time was the order for a good amount of players.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904056046337081719

The Bay Area Surf side had a few standouts who really impacted the game, even though the match ended in a (0-0) draw. [player_tooltip player_id='202683' first='Jayla' last='Swindle'], [player_tooltip player_id='206664' first='Lynn' last='Byun'], [player_tooltip player_id='262616' first='Aris' last='Yu'], and [player_tooltip player_id='111108' first='Allie' last='Huff'] played well for Surf. Swindle, a prep soccer player ranked #24 in CA and #9 in position, made crisp passes, had a calm presence in the mid, and got players into scoring range. She was active on both sides of the pitch, but her strength was in slicing through the middle and delivering smooth passes to any spot on the field. Swindle was selected for the US Youth Soccer ODP national team. She is also a Prep Soccer Girls ID Camp: NorCal 2024 standout.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904044738275103206

Byun also had a solid game. She is the #93 ranked player in CA and #37 in position in prep soccer. She made her presence felt in the middle, made strong challenges, and led the surf attack. Lynn had a great high school season as her team won a treble (WCAL League Champs, CCS D1 Champs, and NorCal D1 Champions). I was fortunate to attend the CCS finals match in which she scored the goal to give Saint Francis their second crown. Byun will definitely rise in the rankings, as she played up last week and matched the level of the play as players one to two years older.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904047130953613657

[player_tooltip player_id='262616' first='Aris' last='Yu'] and [player_tooltip player_id='111108' first='Allie' last='Huff'] also contributed to the Surf attack. You made strong stops on defense, were quick with counterattacks, and slipped passes between the defensive line. I covered her team's quarterfinal match and championship match as the Sacred Heart Prep Gators won the CCS D5 championship. Huff was everywhere, and she played from touchline to touchline. She is also the #37-ranked player in the nation, #15 in CA, and #5 in position, creating space in the mid, distributing well, and playing strong on both halves.

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904050994972971413

https://twitter.com/BayAreaSocScout/status/1904053484028104765

It was a very entertaining match as both sides had quality shots on goal. The goalkeepers from each side should also be commended for their quality play. At least each goalkeeper kept a minimum of 3 goals off the board. The game ended with a (0-0) final, yet the entertainment by these high-level players was worth every single minute of the match.

Played as a right back and she provided an extra layer of protection in the defensive third. She showed some flashes of quick change of direction, delivered quick passes from the back or midfield, and made good defensive stops by calculating when to step into passing lanes. Her defensive efforts supported her team in stopping the high-powered Surf attack which put up 3 goals on the board against Davis Legacy during a week one matchup.
