Guilherme Torres | Prep Soccer Scout
Reyes is a central midfielder with the Houston Dynamo U16 team. Despite also having a significant defensive role with the team, what sets him apart from other players in the position is his ability to organize the game and distribute the ball. Reyes’ vision opens up many possibilities for him when he has the ball, and he’s capable of making the right choices and delivering accurate passes even when under pressure. He typically operates around the midfield line, where he has more time and space on the ball, but also likes to step into the final third to feed his forwards with through balls and attempt shots from distance. Reyes also contributes defensively, helping close out the space in the center of the field and stepping up to make tackles and intercept passes.

A standout central midfielder, Reyes has earned call-ups for both the US and Mexico’s U15 national teams over the last few months. He’s an excellent passer, who makes a difference with his ability to organize the game and initiate offensive plays with his excellent vision. Reyes operates as more of a deep-lying playmaker, a role that gives him more time on the ball to see the game and pick the best passing options, but he also likes to step into the final third, from where he can punish opponents with perfectly-weighted through balls and shots from distance. He developed the defensive side of his game in a significant way over the last few months and is more active and effective when playing defense, stepping up on the right moments to make plays.

In a difficult match for the Dynamo, Reyes was one of the few players on the team to display some clarity when on the ball. Typically a defensive midfielder, he played in a more advanced role because of the absence of some of the team’s playmakers and took good care of the ball, rarely wasting possession and leading his team’s efforts when they wanted to circulate the ball. Recently called up for the U15 USYNT, he also made some significant defensive contributions, getting tackles around his team’s penalty box that prevented what could have been dangerous shots from the Austin side.

Reyes played a clean game in the center of the field and was instrumental in helping his team keep the ball and advance it despite playing down a man for most of the match. With the Dynamo trailing, he had to play a more advanced role in midfield and he displayed good quality in the final third, passing and dribbling the ball efficiently. Reyes initiated his team’s comeback with an amazing shot from outside the penalty box and continued to contribute to the attack after that. He was also solid defensively, covering ground in the center of the field and forcing GFI to play wide.

. Reyes is the most technical of the two and has the most freedom to support the offense. His passing is excellent as he has great vision and doesn’t need much time on the ball to move it from one side to the other. Reyes, who was recently in a training camp with the Mexican U15 national team in Spain, has added more bite to his game lately as is growing as a defensive player.

Playing as a central midfielder, Reyes saw the ball a lot and, on most occasions, did a good job with it. The midfielder used his vision to help circulate the ball and at, times, needed just two touches to make it go from one side of the field to the other. As the Dynamo trailed, he played more vertically, looking to find teammates with passes behind the backline and to make switches that would catch Austin’s defense out of shape, having some success. He was involved in the play that generated the penalty kick that decided the match for Austin and was a little bit naive and unlucky with how he challenged Talos.

Midfielder. Reyes already earned a promotion to the U15 team last season. There’s every reason to believe he will continue to play up an age group based on those performances. He’s a No. 6 or a No. 8. He loves to have the ball at his feet. Really advanced in his tactical approach as he adjusts his body positioning before receiving the ball and constantly checks his shoulders. He never loses possession of the ball. Great first touch, tremendous understanding of how to get away from pressure. Could improve on his defense. He’s not a physical tackler, but he’s good at closing off options with his long strides. Reyes is exceptionally talented and smart. He’s got all the characteristics of a future star and the mentality to back it up. Dynamo continue to produce high-level prospects from the youngest age groups thanks to the groundwork the academy did many years ago.
